Challenges
Outages are among the most complex and high-pressure challenges utilities face, requiring rapid operational execution and resilient crisis leadership. SMUD partnered with U2030 to host a Mixed Utility Outage Workgroup, bringing together outage management leaders from across utilities to share strategies, compare response frameworks, and co-create new emergency coordination approaches.
Approach
Using U2030’s facilitation model, the session combined structured discussion with rapid ideation. Participants analyzed real outage scenarios, explored change communication challenges during crises, and identified success patterns that are replicable across utilities.
Outcomes
The workgroup produced practical recommendations on data visibility, cross-department coordination, and post-incident learning. It created a trusted peer network that continues to exchange insights during real events. “After this session,” one participant shared, “outage response no longer feels like something we do alone—it feels like we’re part of a larger network learning together.”
